group of orange balls of light, slow moving, in NC

A cluster of orange lights observed moving slowly in Charlotte, NC.

Time: 7:30 PM
Location: Charlotte, NC

Has anyone seen these? They were definitely not ordinary airplanes. Extremely bright and moving at a sluggish pace, they seemed to emerge in the sky close to Ursa Major and disappeared behind the treeline before reaching Orion. I managed to capture just one on camera, but there were about 4 to 6 of them together at one point.

  1. It sounds like you had quite an interesting sighting! What you described—orange balls of light moving slowly in a group—could potentially be a few different things. One possibility is that they could be drones, especially if they were part of a coordinated display or a light show. Another option might be weather balloons or even satellites reflecting sunlight, although those usually don’t have a bright orange appearance. It’s also possible that you witnessed something like Chinese lanterns or other types of balloons releasing light. If you happen to find out more about what they were, please share! It’s always intriguing to hear about unusual sightings in the sky.
