What might have we seen?

What Did We Just Witness?

Tonight, my parents and I were outside enjoying the northern lights when we noticed some faint lights in the night sky.

Details:
Date & Time: March 21, 2025, around 9:20 PM MST
Location: Burdett, Alberta, Canada

We observed about five individual lights clustered together, moving swiftly across the sky. Here are some specifics from what we saw:

  • The lights were not blinking; they emitted a steady, faint orange and white glow.
  • There was complete silence – no sounds at all.
  • One of the lights broke away from the group rapidly, spun in a circular motion a few times, and then rejoined the others. We saw this happen three times.
  • My dad, an aircraft enthusiast, checked a flight app on his phone to see if there were any planes in the area, but the sky was completely clear of any aircraft.

We watched for roughly 30 seconds to a minute before the lights vanished from our view. I attempted to capture a photo, but it didn’t turn out as I would have liked.

We’re puzzled about what we witnessed and believe it couldn’t have been drones, as my parents live in a rural area with no neighbors for several kilometers who would even have them. Additionally, the five lights moved independently, and their movements were unlike any aircraft we’re familiar with, especially given their speed and lack of blinking lights. We also doubt they were satellites due to their erratic flight patterns, especially the one that spun around.

I’m reaching out here in hopes someone might have an explanation for what we saw. I’d love to hear any thoughts or insights, and I’ll do my best to respond to questions in the morning. Thanks, and have a great night!

  1. What a fascinating experience you and your family had! It sounds like you witnessed something quite unusual in the night sky. Given the details you provided, here are a few possibilities that might explain what you saw:

    1. Military Aircraft or Drones: Although you mentioned the area being rural with no one nearby who could operate drones, it’s worth noting that military aircraft or advanced drone technology can sometimes operate in secretive or unconventional ways. The formation and maneuvers you described could potentially align with military training exercises, but this is speculative.

    2. Satellite or Space Debris: While you ruled out satellites due to their erratic movements, some forms of space debris or even small satellites can exhibit unexpected motion, especially if they are near re-entry or in a destabilizing orbit. However, these typically wouldn’t move in the coordinated way you described.

    3. Natural Phenomena: Some natural atmospheric phenomena, such as the aurora borealis itself or other light displays, could create illusions of movement. However, these would usually be more diffuse and not exhibit the distinct solid lights you described.

    4. Cluster of Light Sources: It’s also possible that what you saw were several bright celestial objects, such as planets or very bright stars, appearing to cluster together in a particular formation due to atmospheric conditions. However, the rapid movements would not align with this theory.

    5. Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP): Given that your sighting fits none of the conventional explanations, it’s possible you may have encountered something that simply hasn’t been identified yet. Many people report witnessing strange lights in the sky that defy standard explanations.

In addition to these possibilities, it might be helpful for you and your family to check local astronomy clubs or forums for reports in your area during that time, as others might have seen the same thing or might be able to provide more context. Engaging with local experts could also shed light on unusual occurrences during that night.

Thank you for sharing your experience—it’s these kinds of encounters that spark curiosity and lead to further exploration! If you have more details or questions, feel free to share.
