Questions for ATC

Tomorrow, I’ll be touring an ATC tower and have the opportunity to ask the staff some questions. While I have a few standard inquiries lined up, I’m really tempted to throw in something like, “So, have you seen any UFOs?” Instead of risking not being invited back, I should probably think of a few more interesting questions to ask. Any suggestions?

  1. That sounds like an exciting opportunity! Here are some fun and interesting questions you could consider asking the ATC staff, alongside your UFO query:

    1. What’s the most unusual or memorable situation you’ve encountered while on duty?
    2. How do you handle communication with pilots when they’re experiencing an emergency?
    3. Have you ever had a ‘close call’ that required quick thinking?
    4. What’s the busiest time of day at your facility, and how do you manage the traffic?
    5. Are there certain aircraft or airlines that are consistently more challenging to communicate with?
    6. How do you deal with disruptions, like a sudden change in weather?
    7. What technology or tools do you rely on the most in your daily work?
    8. Can you explain the difference between Class A and Class B airspace?
    9. How does the team coordinate with other control towers when managing air traffic in the same area?
    10. Do you have any tips for aspiring air traffic controllers?

As for your UFO question, you could frame it in a more engaging way, like asking, “Do you have any interesting stories about unidentified flying objects or unusual sightings?” This could open up a more fun conversation while still being respectful of their professionalism. Enjoy your tour!
