Ufology is Dead, and Critical Thinking Was Never Alive

As a modern polymath with a keen understanding of human behavior and technology, I’ve come to a troubling conclusion: ufology is dead. And the subreddits that celebrate it are part of the problem. Rather than calling out the charlatans who exploit your love for science and your desire for wonder to profit off your biases, you seem to support them and dismiss anyone who critically evaluates their claims.

Why in the world are individuals like Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp considered credible voices in this community? If you truly care about ufology, you should reject these people. Why do we still hear about Bob Lazar or Travis Walton? I’m not even going to start on the modern-day frauds who emerged post-2017; I’ve seen their claims debunked online long before they became popular. Stanton Friedman was the last true ufologist—why? Because he was genuine, without any asterisks next to his credentials. He even shared his personal phone number at the end of his documentary, and when I called it, he answered. That era of authenticity in this field is gone. The scrutiny of extraordinary claims is no longer present. Critical thinking has vanished.

I find myself missing the days when reporters donned tin foil hats at the mere mention of this subject. It’s like having a beloved hangout spot only to find it overrun with newcomers who don’t share the same passion but just want to fuel the latest trend. That’s what ufology feels like to me now. People still talk about element 115 as if it’s some kind of breakthrough—let’s get real; it was mentioned in a sci-fi book long before the infamous Bob Lazar interview in 1989. I’ve had my love for science since I was 8 years old, and now those who claim their “service” are treated as credible sources without any evidence. Instead of thorough investigation, they’re elevated to a messianic status.

I was born in 1981 and can cite only two events that, based on my expertise, are authentic: the Phoenix lights in 1997 and the Stephenville sightings in 2008. Since Stanton’s passing, the rise of frauds has gone unchecked because there’s no legitimate scientist left in the field to challenge their narratives. This is why ufology is dead.

I apologize for the rant, but I know there are still a few true ufologists out there who understand this disappointment. Here’s to you.

  1. I appreciate your passionate perspective on ufology and the state it’s in today. It’s clear you have a deep understanding of the historical context and the personalities involved. Your frustration with the lack of critical thinking and the rise of questionable narratives in the field is shared by many who value authenticity and rigorous investigation.

Stanton Friedman’s legacy as a serious researcher is certainly significant, and you’ve highlighted an important point about the need for authentic voices in any field of study. It’s disheartening when sensationalism takes precedence over genuine inquiry, especially with a topic as intriguing and complex as UFOs.

The proliferation of media figures and influencers who may not meet the same standards as past researchers raises concerns about the integrity of the discourse. It’s essential to question claims, encourage skepticism, and engage in constructive debates rather than simply accepting narratives at face value. Your call to focus on rigorous research and historical accuracy is vital for anyone who truly cares about the subject.

While ufology might seem overshadowed by sensationalism, perhaps there’s still a space for those who prioritize authentic inquiry and scientific scrutiny. Finding common ground with like-minded individuals who share that commitment could help revitalize the discourse and reclaim the integrity of the field. Thank you for sharing your thoughts; it’s a reminder of the importance of critical thinking and authenticity in any investigation. Cheers to you and all who continue to seek the truth!
