While driving home on the turnpike today around 3:30 PM, I noticed a white dot in the sky. At first, I thought it might be an unusual plane trail, but it didn’t have that fuzzy appearance typical of contrails, and there was an airplane with a visible trail nearby for reference. I kept my eyes on the dot for a while, and then it began to change shape. I wish I had asked my wife to record it, but I was so captivated that I didn’t mention it to her.
I’ve sketched the various phases as best as I could on my phone, though my drawing doesn’t fully capture the clarity of the shapes. They were well-defined and the transformation was fluid, taking place over the course of about 15 to 20 seconds. Towards the end, the shape broke apart into two parts that resembled droplets, drifting apart slowly before fading away—one moving to the left and the other downward.
I have no idea what this could have been. I’ve never seen clouds or airplane trails behave like that before.
