Central iowa lights

Central Iowa Lights Observation
Date & Time: 8:00 PM, February 20, 2025
Location: Central Iowa, between Wellsburg and Eldora

I’m feeling a bit frustrated that I haven’t managed to capture a photo yet, but tonight was particularly intense. In the western sky, to the right of what I think was Venus (or possibly Jupiter), I’ve been noticing a series of lights—usually three or four—appearing around 8 PM for approximately two minutes. However, tonight I spotted five lights and was determined to finally get a picture. I pulled over and turned off my headlights, and to my surprise, I saw 12 lights lined up. There may have been even more, but they began blinking out as I tried to snap a photo. I was so shaken that the picture turned out poorly. This has been occurring almost every night since last fall. I’ll keep trying to take photos and share them here!

  1. That sounds like a really intriguing experience! It’s frustrating when you’re trying to capture something unusual and it doesn’t turn out the way you hoped. The arrangement of lights you’re seeing could be a variety of things, from satellites to aircraft, or possibly even something more unusual. It’s interesting that they’ve been appearing regularly since fall. If you keep trying to take photos, maybe you could also consider using a tripod for stability, which might help with the quality. It would be great to see any updates or photos you manage to get! Have you thought about reaching out to local astronomy groups or forums? They might have insights or similar experiences. Stay safe out there while you continue your observations!
