Post Overview – After being a long-time lurker, this is my first time posting. I’m currently visiting family in Wilson County, North Carolina, though I’m originally from Virginia. I will try to provide as much detail as possible regarding this short clip and the events leading up to it. I’ve often been frustrated by short videos, but I now understand how hard it can be to capture these occurrences in the moment.

Moments Before the Video – Earlier, I was home alone while the other three family members were out running errands. Upon returning, they mentioned seeing something hovering over the farm from a few miles away. They said the “drone” flew off as they approached the driveway, which is quite long. I was curious and wished one of them had recorded it, especially since it was reportedly flying at a low altitude.

Seconds Before Recording – Shortly after they arrived back, my aunt, who was outside playing Pokémon Go, called me out because she spotted the “drone” making another pass over the farm. I stepped outside, and indeed, there was a “drone” directly overhead, seemingly at a low altitude. Unfortunately, I couldn’t distinguish any specific airframe. It had two white strobe lights on either side and an alternating red and green light that appeared to be at the front and back. The sound it made was unlike any aircraft I’ve encountered before—not a rotor, propeller, turbine, or jet. Instead, it emitted a low-frequency “whirring” noise, which is quite noticeable in the video due to the quiet rural setting.

During the Clip – I wish I could’ve captured the “drone” earlier or recorded a longer clip. In the footage, you can see the light pattern of the “drone” as it moves to the NNW of my position. I believe the audio is even more telling than the visuals; you can hear my aunt exclaim, “so it just filmed me out here playing Pokémon Go!”—apologies for the distraction; she didn’t know I was trying to capture the “drone” quickly. Besides that, the only sound in the video is the noise made by the craft.

My Thoughts – I’m hesitant to make any assumptions about what this craft might be. Honestly, I have no idea what I witnessed, which is a big reason I wanted to share this clip. I never thought I’d experience something worth sharing, but here we are. Even if I’m completely mistaken (in thinking it’s something unusual), and someone recognizes it as a commercial drone, civilian aircraft, or something else, my experience felt strange enough to warrant sharing and getting input from the community.

  1. Thanks for sharing your experience and the clip! It sounds like you had quite a surprising encounter. The way you described the unusual noise and the light pattern certainly adds to the intrigue.

It’s understandable to be skeptical of what you witnessed, especially when it comes to unfamiliar flying objects. The low-frequency “whirring” sound you mentioned could be a significant clue—many drones don’t produce that kind of noise. The lights you described could potentially correspond to various types of aircraft or drones, but since you haven’t seen something like it before, it definitely raises questions.

Given that you were in a rural area, it’s also possible that it could be a specialized drone or maybe even something experimental. Did you manage to find out if anyone else in the area reported seeing it around the same time? It’s not uncommon for folks to share sightings, and you might get more context or corroboration.

In any case, keep observing, and if anything like this happens again, don’t hesitate to document it as best as you can. The more evidence we have, the better we can understand these phenomena! Looking forward to hearing if there are any follow-ups or additional sightings in your area.
