Orb, Satellites, or Something Else? Noteworthy Sightings in Southeast MA from February 5-10, 2025
Location: Southern Plymouth County, Massachusetts
Although my view of the sky is limited due to the surrounding woods, I’ve been observing a notable amount of activity in the evenings over the past couple of weeks. The peak time seems to be between 6:00 and 6:40 PM. I’ve also taken to stargazing around 9:00 PM, but haven’t spotted much during that time lately. I’ve been out almost every night, except when the visibility is poor or it’s raining. Below, I’ve included a shaky video from my phone capturing one of the sightings on 2/5, along with a log I’ve started to track these observations. I’m curious to hear thoughts from others—while many of these appear to be satellites, some behave in ways that make me question their identity.
Monday, 2/3: Approximately 15 objects observed over about 20 minutes between 6:00 and 7:00 PM.
I noticed many “satellite orbs”—steady white lights gliding smoothly across the sky, similar to satellites. Their flight paths were generally straight, with a few that drifted slightly.
Anomalies:
– One “satellite” orb suddenly vanished mid-flight in clear sky, without any clouds to obscure it.
Tuesday, 2/4: 5 objects seen between 6:00 and 7:00 PM.
Most resembled the “satellite orbs” from the previous night; nothing particularly unusual stood out apart from the number of objects moving in various directions.
Wednesday, 2/5: 13 objects spotted between 6:20 – 7:00 PM.
Primarily more “satellite” orbs.
Anomalies:
– One orb disappeared abruptly in clear sky, followed by 1-2 blinks of light nearby.
– I saw an orb that was visible for only a few seconds, strobing in luminosity—appearing as a single white light that steadily fluctuated in brightness before disappearing behind tree branches.
– One orb crossed paths with an airplane, clearly below it, suggesting it was not a satellite despite its similar appearance.
Around 8:35 PM, I went outside briefly and spotted what looked like one shooting star.
Friday, 2/7: 8 “satellite orbs” observed between 6:38 – 7:00 PM.
Anomalies:
– Another disappearing orb was noted in clear sky, though a small cloud was nearby. The orb never reappeared despite ample clear sky along its trajectory.
Monday, 2/10: 7 “satellite orbs” observed from 5:58 PM to 6:21 PM.
I’m eager to find out if anyone else has witnessed similar phenomena or has insights into what these lights might be!
That’s some fascinating observation you’ve been keeping! It sounds like you’ve been quite dedicated to stargazing, especially with the frequency of your sightings. The patterns you’ve recorded certainly offer some intriguing points for discussion.
Based on your log, it appears you’re primarily encountering objects that resemble satellite orbs. The consistent movement and straight paths are indeed common characteristics of satellites. However, the disappearing orbs and the orb displaying strobe-like behavior are more unusual and raise questions. Are there any local satellites that might fit this description? Some satellites can be quite bright and might give off unusual reflections at times, but sudden disappearances are definitely odd.
The intersection with a plane path is particularly interesting. If the orb was below the plane, it suggests that it was not in orbit, making it less likely to be a satellite. It’s also possible that what you’re observing could be unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or even drones, which have become increasingly popular and might exhibit behaviors that could be mistaken for satellite movement.
As for the “anomalies” you’ve highlighted, they are definitely worth further investigation. Have you considered checking local astronomy communities or forums? Others in your area might be seeing the same things or have insights into whether there are any scheduled satellite launches or nearby air traffic that could explain some of your sightings.
Keep up the great work with your observations, and I hope you continue to gather more data. It would be interesting to see any patterns emerge over time as well!
