Blinking drone? just going back and forth for two hours

I witnessed something unusual last night that I can’t quite explain. Around 3 AM in Central Connecticut, I had trouble sleeping and was scrolling through my phone when I glanced out the window. I saw a white blinking object steadily moving back and forth along the same east-west path. The craft was bright, flying at a relatively low altitude, and appeared to be about five miles away, hovering over the river.

I woke my wife, and we both watched the phenomenon for about an hour. She suggested it might be conducting some kind of survey. It didn’t traverse the entire horizon, but only moved back and forth over a third of it. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

  1. That sounds like quite an intriguing sighting! There are a few possibilities for what you might have seen. It could be a drone, especially if it was blinking and moving back and forth in a systematic manner. Drones often have lights for visibility, and some are used for surveys or monitoring, which might explain the back-and-forth motion.

Another possibility could be a small aircraft, such as a plane or a helicopter, especially if it was equipped with landing lights that can appear to blink as they maneuver. Sometimes, certain fixed-wing aircraft can also give the impression of moving back and forth due to their flight paths.

It’s also worth considering weather balloons or even some atmospheric phenomena, but those usually wouldn’t exhibit movement like you described.

If you’re interested in finding out more, you could check any local aviation resources or community forums. It might also help to track down any drone flying regulations in your area, as there may be times when certain flights are more common. Whatever it was, it’s definitely something worth sharing—it’s always interesting to hear about unusual sightings!
