As I pulled up my window shade to gaze out, I noticed several unusual lights in the sky that puzzled me. The footage I captured is somewhat unclear, as I opted not to zoom in, which would have made it grainy. If you look around the 7-8 o’clock position from the wing tip, you should see a dot emerge, drift left, fade away, and then another dot appear and move to the right.

I filmed several brief clips over nearly an hour. The lights would surface for a few minutes at a time, disappear, and then return a few moments later. I even paid for in-flight WiFi to text my partner about my bewildering sighting.

The phenomenon began with a bright, warm yellow-orange light. At times, its hue seemed to change, but it never blinked. I double-checked for any reflections from cabin lights, even going so far as to cover the window with my blanket, yet it was definitely not a reflection. The lights moved slightly—slowly but noticeably. They shimmered in and out, and I doubt they were disappearing behind clouds, as there were none visible at that altitude. It truly appeared as if the lights themselves were dimming. At one point, I spotted three lights simultaneously, although I only managed to capture two on video. If you zoom in on the footage, you can briefly see both dots as one fades out and another comes in. They didn’t seem to form any specific pattern or direction of flight. I estimate they were around the same altitude as my plane, possibly slightly lower. Interestingly, there was a moment when I thought one of the dots transformed into a vertical, slightly squiggly line, but I got distracted when they served dinner.

I’m curious if anyone has insights about this sighting. I considered the possibility of military drones operating over southern Somalia. It’s also worth mentioning that about an hour earlier, further south (probably near the Kenyan border), I saw a fascinating thunderstorm with lightning. The storm clouds had already drifted away by the time these lights appeared. I also observed another airplane flying below us during the thunderstorm, and I can confidently say it looked very different from these lights; they were definitely not planes.

Additionally, I’d heard about people “interacting” with lights in the sky before, and I sort of tried to communicate with them. To my surprise, it felt like they responded in some way. I was questioning whether I was seeing a single light or multiple ones, and that’s when I spotted all three together. I even contemplated whether they were actual moving objects or perhaps planes that switched from a horizontal to a vertical trajectory.

I’d love to hear any thoughts or similar experiences from others!

Unusual Lights Spotted from Airplane Over Somalia Date: March 17, 2025 Time: Between 7 and 8 PM Location: Approximately 40,000 feet above the southern Somalia coast I recently had an intriguing experience while flying from Southern Africa to Qatar.
