If I remember correctly, it centers around an elderly man who has been in contact with extraterrestrial beings since his days as a young airman at a remote base in the Southwest desert, possibly Nevada. One memorable detail is how he first encountered them; he was drawn to the sound of birds chirping, which he later discovered was actually their way of communicating.
