It’s fascinating to see how phenomena like this can confuse so many people, especially someone as prominent as a mayor. <\/p>\n
When you look at an infrared (IR) light source using a standard camera while that light is aimed at you, the camera picks up a bright glow that can obscure any physical objects located behind the IR source. As the light orientation changes and turns away from you, the camera can then reveal the previously hidden object.<\/p>\n
Contemporary military and commercial aircraft utilize IR systems for a range of applications, and some consumer drones are equipped with them as well. It’s worth noting that Department of Defense drones operating in FAA-restricted airspace for research purposes are likely to be outfitted with these systems.<\/p>\n
